Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The Postdoctoral Research Associates will aide in the design and development of Multiphysics simulation codes for use in GPU accelerated high-performance computing environments.

 

The Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate conducts state-of-the-art research and development in computer and computational sciences in support of DOE's missions and programs. We develop and deploy

leading edge computing and information technology capabilities to keep computational sciences at a level comparable to experimental sciences in the pursuit of scientific discovery and technical innovation.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary research environment consisting of computational scientists, computer scientists, experimentalists, and engineers/physicists conducting basic and applied research in support of Laboratory missions such isotope enrichment, advanced manufacturing, and nuclear nonproliferation
  • Participate in design and implementation of Multiphysics simulation codes, including the development of numerical algorithms, following team planning, generating documentation, performing verification and validation, and adhering to software quality processes
  • Author peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports for internal and external release as well as represent the organization via technical presentations in workshops and conferences

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Thesis and/or coursework experience in mathematical and computational modeling of one or more of the following areas: fluid dynamics (including compressible flow), heat transfer, solid mechanics, electromagnetic applications (especially motors), plasma physics, physics-informed machine learning

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with many-core architectures such as graphical processing units (GPUs).
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of numerical algorithms in C/C++
  • Experience working with numerical linear algebra algorithms (Trilinos library experience is great)
  • Experience with high-order finite element methods, the material point method, or discontinuous Galerkin methods
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary research environment that follows modern software quality standards (version control, unit testing, continuous integration, etc.)
  • Experience working with large-scale simulation codebases running on pre-exascale supercomputing systems
  • Software design education or experience, including generic programming, object-oriented analysis, and scripting languages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
