The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced engineer or scientist to conduct computational polymer physics research & development in the Polymers & Specialty Materials Branch of the Photonic, Electronics, and Soft Materials Division.  This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12/13 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, OH.  This position may be filled as a Flexible Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts computational polymeric materials and polymer processing research and development
  • Collaborates with computational and experimental scientists and engineers inside and outside AFRL in the performance of basic and applied research
  • Assesses and identifies opportunities for polymeric materials and processes to deliver aerospace & defense capabilities
  • Mentors junior level researchers

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain Secret Clearance
  • Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution.

Desired Qualifications

  • Graduate degree, Ph.D. preferred. Polymer Physics, Polymer Chemistry, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science.
  • Experience with the application of computational methods to include machine learning, molecular dynamics, and high throughput screening methods to the study of polymer physics
  • Broad expertise in polymeric materials, physics, and processing
  • Experience with polymer rheology and its application to polymeric deposition processes to include extrusion, thin film deposition, and additive manufacturing
  •  Knowledge of and experience with the characterization and analysis of polymeric materials
  • Proven track record of research publications and presentations
  • Experience independently managing research projects
  • Experience mentoring junior-level researchers
