Come and do the kind of computing that got you into technology in the first place. Work with cutting-edge tech and world-leading scientists and engineers. And harness the power of some of the country's most advances supercomputers to tackle work that improves daily life in the UK and far beyond.

Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you're equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

About the role:
We are looking for someone to help us create the software tools of modern research.
In this role, you will have the opportunity and freedom to design and build research-enabling software and have an impact well beyond any specific research project. The main task, initially, will be to re-develop the CCP-NC database – an open repository of computational solid state NMR results. This will be an exciting testing ground for the wider Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI) initiative and will involve working closely with the UK solid state NMR community as well as interfacing with data management experts in STFC Scientific Computing Department.
The role sits at the interface between the PSDI (https://www.psdi.ac.uk/) project and the Collaborative Computational Project for NMR Crystallography (CCP-NC), https://www.ccpnc.ac.uk/ and will support the work and further developments at this interface. In addition, the goals of this work will have strong overlap with those of the new Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC).

You would be involved in:
Re-developing and maturing prototype databases using state-of-the-art technologies.
Developing database APIs that follow emerging standards and community recommendations and facilitating the interaction with other data sources and IT components.
Working with users to provide high-quality web interfaces aligned with user requirements.
Providing well-documented, maintainable software.

About us:
The PSDI and CCP-NC are both involved with providing researchers in the Physical Sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science) with data sources that facilitate their research. CCP-NC, for example, develops software tools for a multidisciplinary community of NMR spectroscopists, crystallographers, materials modellers and application scientists, who work on understanding and characterising solid materials.  The PSDI aims to accelerate research in the Physical Sciences by providing tools and services to help researchers to handle, analyse and share data, building upon the data systems researchers already use.
In addition, the work is aligned with a rapidly growing initiative – the Ada Lovelace Centre – aimed at transforming research performed at large experimental Facilities (synchrotrons, neutron and muon sources, laser-based facilities etc) through a multi-disciplinary approach to data processing, computer simulation and data analytics. This initiative will provide computing hardware, build software and provide computational and data analytics expertise that will spark a paradigm shift in the capability of scientists to design, analyse and interpret experiments.

About you:
This is a highly collaborative role, and you will work closely with a variety of people, as such the ability to interact and communicate well with others is a must. You must have the ability to develop good working relationships and be eager to develop skills in the interaction with experimental scientists. You also must be available to travel to attend short in-person meetings (in the UK) with relevant SCD-STFC, CCP-NC and PSDI stakeholders.

In addition, we are looking for someone with the following experience and skills, which will be assessed either during the screening (S) or interview (I) or both (S&I) stages.

Essential Criteria:
1st degree in relevant computing or scientific discipline (S)
Experience in s/w development in a scientific application (S&I)
Experience in web development, including Python-based frameworks (S&I)
Experience in managing or working with databases (S&I)
Experience working with software engineering tools and practices (e.g., version control, documentation, issue tracking and continuous integration) (S&I)
Understanding of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) Principles (S&I)
Good written and verbal communication skills in English (S&I)
Strong track record of initiative and problem solving (I)
