Salary:

Lecturer Grade F: £37,474 to £42,155 per annum

Lecturer Grade G: £43,414 to £51,805 per annum

Senior Lecturer: £53,353 to £61,823 per annum

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading Engineering Schools in the UK where you will support and inspire the next generation of Newcastle University engineering graduates.

As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Computational Mechanics and Engineering Design, you will have an outstanding record in mechanical engineering, particularly in engineering design using data-driven mechanics, design optimization and modelling. You will work within and across boundaries to address major research challenges, attract grant income, generate high quality impact outcomes and expand existing capability in the School and University. The post holder will also be expected to actively contribute to the planning, governance and delivery of an innovative, positive and inspiring mechanical engineering educational offer. Preference will be given to candidates whose expertise bridges fundamental and applied aspects of engineering design.

The post is in the Mechanical Engineering & Marine Technology discipline, specifically the Design, Manufacturing and Materials (DMM) Academic Group. With interdisciplinary ambition, however, you will be expected to contribute to the further development of our expertise in areas of interest through supporting existing research initiatives, developing new ones, and contributing to teaching on our UG and PG Mechanical Engineering and Engineering programmes, and relevant industry focussed CPD programmes.

The School aspires to grow its capability with strategic appointments that support world-class research. The post holder will be based at the state-of-the-art new £110m Stephenson Building.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

In-depth subject knowledge/expertise in modelling of mechanical systems and sub-systems, engineering mechanics or structures
Research track record, including publications in high quality and internationally recognised research journals
Evidence of presentation of work to the national and international research community (e.g., conferences, seminars, and similar high-profile events)
Effective time management and prioritisation skills to balance the potentially conflicting demands of teaching, research, and administration; and the ability to meet deadlines
Excellent skills in communication, both orally and in written forms, including the ability to create, organise and present teaching and learning materials effectively for both large group and small group teaching
Teaching, lecturing or assessment experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level

Desirable (Essential for Senior Lecturer)

Expertise in either sensing and data collection, digitalisation of manufacturing products and processes, transport structures, design of transmission systems for electric drives, e-fluids
Experience of successful leadership of funded research and taught programme components. (Essential for Senior Lecturer)
Experience of recruiting, supervising, and motivating different types of students
Evidence of introducing new insights to the content, delivery, or assessment of educational programmes
Evidence of effective management of individual or team projects, and successful task completion
Excellent collaborative, interpersonal and team working skills, resolving tensions/difficulties if they arise, and engaging/signposting pastoral care as appropriate
Experience in delivering laboratory/field sessions and technology enabled learning
Post-doctoral research or industrial experience in a relevant area
