NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED) such as a pacemaker defibrillator drug-releasing pump hearing aids or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring monitoring and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:

$138600 - $235500

*Salary range is estimated and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a dedicated individual to manage the Computational Math Department (1442) which performs projects across the research-to-production spectrum including significant software projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day operational technical and administrative responsibilities of the department
  • Managing members of the workforce within the department to include continuous feedback and mentor on performance goals and career development of staff members
  • Developing the balance between research development and application of Center 1400 software capabilities while ensuring customer's expectations and mission needs are met
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative teaming relationships with managers across 1400 and other key partner organizations across the Laboratory
  • Participating in various Center 1400 and Laboratory initiatives
  • Serving as laboratory PM for the DOE Office of Science ASCR applied mathematics program and participating on Sandias ASCR leadership team
  • Supporting the Computing & Information Science (CIS) Research Foundation
  • Maintaining awareness of the external computational science research community
  • Coordinating recruitment selection training work assignments performance assessment salary recognition and disciplinary actions
  • Ensuring an environment that promotes safety and security as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Serving as a derivative classifier (DC)

This position is eligible for full-time onsite or part-time telecommuting; as a part-time telecommuter the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location at least two days per week.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Masters degree or PhD in a science technology engineering or mathematics (STEM) field plus a bachelor's in STEM.
  • Eight years proven experience
  • Record of scientific/technical achievement and leadership as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • PhD in a relevant STEM field
  • Two years leadership experience
  • Experience developing and leading an R&D agenda to advance capability development and utilization of those capabilities
  • Successful track record of project leadership management and customer focus
  • Experience in the DOE Office of Science ASCR program
  • Demonstrated leadership and network in the external R&D community
  • Ability to formulate communicate and implement a technical and programmatic vision (strategic plan) for the future
  • Experience in scientific computing with expertise in software application and analysis on large-scale high-performance computing platforms
  • Experience with software development using C++ including principles of software quality engineering
  • Current active DOE Q security clearance

The Computational Mathematics Department (1442) performs groundbreaking research driven by DOE needs to develop the mathematical foundations and the algorithmic and software advances to enable accurate predictive and scalable computational simulation methods. We deliver comprehensive theoretical and computational tools that impact Sandias mission and push our capabilities beyond forward simulations. Members of the department interact and collaborate with a broad range of Sandia and DOE staff and also maintain a highly visible external research presence by collaborating with universities and industry publishing peer-reviewed literature participating in professional societies and refereeing and editing for journals.

The Computational Sciences & Math group performs a spectrum of foundational research software development and applied science in the broadly defined computational science field. This includes research into scientific machine learning computational methods and solvers development of software components for large-scale scientific computing development of multiscale multiphysics application codes and close partnerships that involve mission-driven analysis and application of our capabilities. We also support collaborations with the external computational science and math research community. The group consists of five departments: Scientific Machine Learning Computational Mathematics Computational Multiphysics Computational Multiscale and Computational Science.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g. DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
