Job Title Assistant Professor - Computational Biochemistry
Department Chemistry
Essential Functions
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) invites applications for a tenure-track position in computational chemistry. As part of our strategic plan to expand and enhance STEM education and research in the Department and on campus, we seek candidates who will focus on effective teaching, enhancing learning through diversity and inclusion, and developing a productive research program. We will accept applications for appointment at the assistant professor rank. The anticipated start date for this position is August 15, 2023.  The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching mission of the department, establish productive research collaborations and actively seek external funding to establish a productive research program. Teaching foundational courses in biochemistry chemistry is expected. Teaching in-depth courses in an area of expertise is encouraged.

The Chemistry Department has 20 faculty members serving over 100 undergraduate majors and supporting approximately 900 students per semester from other disciplines in undergraduate courses (https://www.unomaha.edu/college-of-arts-and-sciences/chemistry/index.php). Undergraduate education is the primary mission of the Department, and research involving undergraduate students is supported by the university and expected for tenure track faculty. Faculty in the Department are committed to both education and research and many are actively engaged in multidisciplinary projects, including programs supported by the National Science Foundation. In addition, the Department has a close collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) to offer a recently approved Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science (BSPS). This collaboration involves both courses and research and the candidate would have the opportunity to join that collaboration. The Department offers an ACS accredited bachelor’s degree as well as bachelor’s programs in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemistry Education.

The university, college, and department have a strong commitment to diversity in its varied forms and to fostering an inclusive and welcoming learning environment where students, faculty and staff thrive and succeed. With a metropolitan mission, UNO serves a diverse student body with a large number of first-generation college students, and is also actively engaged with the community (https://www.unomaha.edu/about-uno/mission.php). UNO is both a metropolitan university of distinction and a Carnegie Doctoral Research institution. UNO transforms and improves the quality of life locally, nationally, and globally. The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic and growing program in the College of Arts and Sciences that is actively engaged with other colleges on the campus as well as community partners.

The University and department have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among the faculty and staff. The University of Nebraska does not discriminate based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and/or political affiliation in its programs, activities, or employment. UNO is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an E-Verify employer.
Work Schedule Monday- Friday, hours vary.
Additional Duties
Participate in service assignments, undergraduate mentoring, engagement with curriculum and fostering best teaching practices; other duties as assigned.

Why UNO?
The University of Nebraska at Omaha is fueled by its historical ties to Omaha. As the first municipal university in Omaha, the early founders’ goal was to make higher education accessible and affordable for the city’s residents. In 1968, the campus joined the University of Nebraska system, and today has the unique role of serving as the state’s metropolitan campus.

Accessibility remains a top priority in UNO’s mission and vision. Today, the campus is known for its student-centered environment, its community engagement, and its dedication to embracing students from all types of backgrounds. UNO’s ranking as the 2020 Best College for LGBTQ+ Students In Nebraska reflects a commitment to the Maverick values of access, inclusion and diversity that make UNO a welcoming campus community, evidenced by the numerous resources and support services offered by the university.

The campus has built strong partnerships with local business, education, government, arts, and civic organizations in the city. UNO’s commitment to community engagement has landed UNO on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for seven consecutive years—the highest federal recognition a school can receive for civic engagement.  This honor is but one of many points of pride for UNO. In 2019, it was ranked in the top ten public institutions in the nation for military friendliness by Military Times magazine for the fifth consecutive year. Nearly 90 percent of UNO’s 15,500 students are from Nebraska, and roughly 60 percent of recent alumni surveyed report graduating with no debt or less than $5,000 in debt. It is simply one of the most competitively priced institutions in the region. UNO, while large enough to provide students with global opportunities, thrives on its personal and close-knit campus culture, where students come first and partnerships with the community grow every day.
