Job Description:

Quantum Algorithms Research Intern

 About Zapata Computing

Zapata Computing, Inc. is a quantum software, services, and applications company with a mission to accelerate the quantum revolution. We are developing a quantum workflow platform to solve critical problems across a wide range of industries. Zapata’s quantum platform Orquestra® combines a powerful software platform and quantum algorithm libraries to deliver real-world solutions across a full range of classical and quantum technologies.

About the Team

The Zapata Quantum Algorithms Research Team works to discover paths to practical quantum advantage using near-term and fault-tolerant quantum computers. Our team wields mathematical techniques and software tools to make advances in areas including quantum simulation, linear algebra, differential equations, fault-tolerance, or fundamental aspects of quantum algorithms and quantum computing. Through this effort, we contribute to Zapata’s intellectual property, software packages, and growing body of research publications. A sample of recent publications are:

  • On proving the robustness of algorithms for early fault-tolerant quantum computers arXiv:2209.11322
  • Quantum algorithm for ground state energy estimation using circuit depth with exponentially improved dependence on precision arXiv:2209.06811
  • Computing ground state properties with early fault-tolerant quantum computers Quantum 6, 761 (2022)
  • State Preparation Boosters for Early Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation
  • Quantum 6, 829 (2022)
  • Minimizing Estimation Runtime on Noisy Quantum Computers PRX Quantum 2, 010346 (2021)

About the Role

We are seeking creative, curious, and inventive problem solvers wishing to push forward their careers alongside our team of quantum algorithms researchers. As a Quantum Algorithms Research Intern, you will help design and carry out a research project to advance the state of the art in quantum algorithms. Interns at Zapata drive research projects at the cutting edge of applied quantum computing. Some of our most exciting discoveries have been led by interns. You will collaborate with other quantum application and research scientists, contributing to our dynamic, highly collaborative, and cross-disciplinary research team. The internship will give you the opportunity to learn about and contribute to real-world applications of quantum computing.

Internships during summer 2023 are preferred, but later dates will be considered case-by-case. While this position is potentially fully remote, it requires partial availability during EST time working hours. Our team highly values in-person interactions, preferring candidates willing to relocate to or occasionally visit one of our offices (Toronto, ON, or Boston, MA).

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Help design and execute a research project in quantum algorithms with mentorship and support from senior research scientists, aiming at a publication in leading academic journals. This includes:
    • Reading and synthesizing papers in the quantum computing literature
    • Developing analytical or numerical methods in quantum algorithms
    • Communicating your work through presentations and manuscript writing
    • For projects involving software, running numerical experiments, and analyzing data using the Orquestra® platform
  • Actively participate in the Zapata research community through paper presentations and research talks.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Currently enrolled in M.Sc. or Ph.D. program relevant to quantum computing such as computer science, applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.
  • Knowledge of or experience with quantum information science.
  • Enthusiasm for communication and collaboration.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Familiarity with or enthusiasm for learning state-of-the-art techniques in quantum algorithms.
  • Record of creative, high-quality work in quantum computing represented by peer-reviewed publications, code repositories, or scientific presentations.
  • Familiarity with mathematical tools from linear algebra, probability, and statistics.
  • Knowledge of python and popular quantum computing packages (e.g, qiskit, cirq, openfermion, etc.).

Location: Remote or option to come into the office. We have locations in Boston, MA; Brentwood, TN; and Toronto, Ontario Canada

Job Type: Internship

Please include a cover letter introducing yourself, explaining why you believe working at Zapata would enhance your research, and a paragraph briefly describing a research topic of interest to you.
