About us

University College London is recruiting two Lecturers (UK equivalent to Assistant Professors) to develop and lead an independent research programme of international quality in theoretical or computational physics applied to biology. The Lecturers will be academic members of the UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy and are expected to develop strong links with the Faculty of Life Sciences. The Lecturers will also be members of the cross-faculty UCL Institute for the Physics of Living Systems (IPLS) and more generally – at UCL and in London as a whole – will have direct access to one of the largest and most vibrant biomedical research communities in Europe. Our aim is to recruit, and support the professional development of, two outstanding early-career researchers working on theoretical or computational research to address scientific problems at the interface between physics and biology at the molecular, cellular or tissue scales.

About the role

The full Job Description and Person Specification can be found in the “Available Documents" section below. Candidates will need to upload (1) a CV (including a list of publications and of previous research funding as appropriate), (2) a statement of research interests and plans as well as the candidate’s approach to research culture (3 pages maximum), (3) a teaching and education statement (2 pages maximum), and (4) the contact information for three people from whom letters of reference may be requested. A cover letter can be included using the non-mandatory section to upload additional documents which may support your application. For an informal discussion about this role, please contact Prof Alexandra Olaya-Castro a.olaya@ucl.ac.uk

About you

Applicants should be strong early-career researchers with A PhD degree in theoretical or computational physics, biophysics or related discipline. They should have postdoctoral research experience and an established track record of applying theoretical or computational physics to interdisciplinary research problems at the interface between physics and biosciences. It is highly desirable that candidates demonstrate experience in collaborative, high-quality research with life scientists across the molecular, cellular or tissue scales. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate capability for teaching physics-related subjects at the undergraduate or graduate levels. Experience supervising students at either undergraduate or postgraduate level is also desirable. Applicants should also demonstrate their ability to support and strengthen an inclusive research culture in the Physics and Astronomy department and in the wider of UCL. Successful candidates will be encouraged and supported to develop high-quality research proposals for independent Fellowships schemes run by UK Research Councils as well as by organisations like the Royal Society and the Wellcome Trust. At UCL we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce.

What we offer

At UCL, we offer a competitive benefits package including 27 days annual leave plus six days (bank holidays are in addition), hybrid and flexible working, final salary pension scheme, season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme, enhanced maternity/ paternity/ adoption pay, workplace nursery, employee assistance programme and much more! For more information on our benefits, please visit our staff benefits webpage. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women. You can read more about our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/equality-diversity-inclusion/ We particularly welcome female applicants and those from an ethnic minority, as they are under-represented within UCL at this level. Our department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award, in recognition of our commitment and demonstrable impact in advancing gender equality.
