Job Description:

The Invitation Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work–life balance. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven postdocs come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here’s your chance to be one of them. At PNNL, you’ll find a positive, fast-paced environment and excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible work schedules and telework options. PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and dollar-stretching, affordable cost of living. Nestled on the scenic banks of the Columbia River in the fun, mid-sized metropolitan area of Tri-Cities, the Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or 3.5 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland. The Opportunity Contribute to PNNL’s goals in scalable synthesis of materials, chemicals, and biological systems as part of the Lab’s Advanced Computing, Mathematics and Data Division (ACMDD). As a postdoctoral researcher, you’ll join a talented, diverse team to make a scientific impact in predicting and controlling behavior of complex engineered and natural systems using advanced large-scale data analysis, parameter estimation methods, and mesoscale and multiscale modeling techniques. You’ll be mentored by Senior Scientists in the Computational Mathematics Group, as you refine your talent in partial differential equations, computational fluid mechanics, grid-based and Lagrangian particle methods, data-driven methods, machine learning, multiscale methods, and uncertainty quantification. The Ideal Candidate If you’re ready to test your talents and training in mathematics and hone your skills at a national laboratory widely recognized for its work in Advanced Computing, Mathematics and Data, we want to connect with you. Details are below, and you don’t need to meet all requirements to be considered. What you’ll do: Develop data and physics driven computational tools for complex engineered systems including power grid Publish results and capability development in high quality, peer-reviewed journals Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of computational and experimental research staff within the ACMDD group and across PNNL Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings Participate in the development of research proposals Extend or develop fundamental mathematics, and novel applications of existing mathematics, to problems critical for national interests Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. in applied mathematics or related fields Training and aptitude in applied mathematics Knowledge of stochastic methods, DAEs, model reduction methods, machine learning methods including but not limited to Gaussian Process Models and Deep Neural Networks Strong verbal and written communications skills Equal Employment Opportunity Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital or family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information. All BMI staff must be able to demonstrate the legal right to work in the United States. BMI is an E-Verify employer. Learn more at jobs.pnnl.gov. Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from participation in certain foreign government talent recruitment programs. If you are offered a position at PNNL and are currently a participant in a foreign government talent recruitment program you will be required to disclose this information before your first day of employment.
