Position Description

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Materials Modelling and Computational Mechanics. The anticipated start date is July 1 2023.

We are seeking an emerging scholar with an original and innovative research program related to materials modelling and computational mechanics to establish a strong research program within the University of Calgary and the Department. Expertise in non-linear computational mechanics with an emphasis on material modelling coupled multi-physics and multi-scale problems is desired. Impact in this area will be evidenced by scholarly output and research impact demonstrating the potential for the applicant to form an independent and internationally recognized research program. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a research group that will develop high-quality publications attract external research funding collaborate locally and internationally and provide an excellent training environment for graduate students and research personnel. Demonstrated evidence of collaborative work with experimentalists and other computational/modelling materials scientists in such endeavours would also be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be a leader in their field passionate about teaching support positive learning outcomes and student experience and add to the diversity of our collegial and vibrant academic community. They will be expected to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the core mechanical engineering program curriculum as well as topics related to solid mechanics materials and computational mechanics. The successful candidate will also actively contribute to teaching curriculum development graduate student supervision and mentoring and is expected to provide service in support of the Department School University and Profession. To be eligible for consideration candidates should have a Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering Engineering Mechanics Engineering Science Materials Engineering or a closely related discipline by the start date. Applicants with relevant industrial experience are encouraged to apply. Strong oral and written English communication skills are required. All candidates should be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
