Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nations security! You could be the highly motivated individual to support development of multi-scale multi-physics computational modeling capabilities for understanding photovoltaic module stressors and degradation modes. This work is part of DuraMAT a Department of Energy consortia effort with a goal of discovering developing de-risking and enabling the commercialization of new materials and designs for PV modules.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Develop and run finite element based multi-physics computational analysis tools
  • Collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams and with partner institutions from national labs academia and industry
  • Communicate results in scientific conferences journal publications and semi-annual consortia workshops

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD conferred within two years in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering computer or physical science field
  • Experience with computational simulation tools and processes
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L Security Clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with geometry modeling and meshing tools
  • Previous experience with coupled multi-physics FEM software
  • Experience with scripting languages for pre- and post-processing and simulation code customization
  • Experience developing successful research proposals
  • Interest in photovoltaics packaging reliability research
  • Strong teaming skills and an ability to interact with colleagues with diverse technical backgrounds
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

The Thermal Sciences and Engineering Department conducts a broad range of technical activities focused on heat transfer numerical analyses and related thermal capabilities. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g. DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e. of the U.S. and another country) your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs continuing availability of funds and satisfactory job performance.
