What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a technical staff member (R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer) to join our collaborative team environment. As an analyst on our team you will perform solid mechanics structural-dynamics and/or hydrocode research development modeling and simulation to support a variety of projects (e.g. nuclear safety design and qualification failure shock and vibration and/or thermal- mechanical response) and customers (e.g. the Departments of Defense and National Nuclear Security Administration university collaborations etc.). Appropriate uncertainty quantification will be used with finite element analysis and other analysis methods to predict component or system behavior under specific operating conditions. Verification and validation of modeling techniques will be used to build model credibility. The analysts in our department work closely with experimental mechanics code development and material science organizations to provide validated results of extremely complex and challenging problems that support the design qualification and fielding of high consequence engineered systems for national security missions.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Build finite element and/or hydrocode models of components sub-assemblies or full systems and using these models perform non-linear static and dynamic or hydrocode analyses to assess design margins failure response design trade studies fatigue life system and sub-assembly environments or provide input to large scale testing for a variety of projects for internal (Sandia) and external customers
  • Perform research development and simulations and share results through internal reports journal publications conferences and internal design testing and qualification reviews
  • Use engineering analysis principles and computational methods to support the design qualification and fielding of high consequence engineered systems for normal and abnormal environments and combinations of environments (random vibration shock blast impact crash and burn)
  • Apply and develop uncertainty quantification techniques and assess model credibility through the application of verification & validation principles
  • Engage with code and model development teams to develop and implement novel models and capabilities for high performance computing algorithms and environments
  • Work closely with teams of code/model developers analysts and experimentalists to develop and implement novel models and capabilities for high performance computing algorithms and provide validated simulation results for complex and challenging R&D problems
  • Collaborate and interact closely with a diverse geographically-dispersed team including engineers and other researchers and analysts across the laboratory at both the California and New Mexico sites

Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 75% or more of the time.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's degree in mechanical civil applied engineering or other applicable engineering field or equivalent experience in lieu of degrees must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge skills and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Educational background in one or more of the following areas: solid mechanics continuum mechanics mechanics of materials structural analysis structural dynamics shock and vibration finite element analysis numerical methods mechanics of materials thermal-mechanical response large deformations material failure modeling
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools (e.g. Abaqus Solidworks Simulation Ansys LS-Dyna CTH ALE3D Simulia Sierra Cubit Paraview Ensight)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ph.D. degree in mechanical civil applied engineering or other applicable engineering field;
  • Demonstrated ability to present and publish research findings;
  • Demonstrated experience in computational mechanics or code development for engineering sciences applications;
  • Proficiency with code development in a modern programming language such as C++ or Python
  • Experience with finite-element methods continuum and noncontinuum mechanics;
  • Background in mechanical design;
  • Plasticity and material-failure modeling experience.

About Our Team:

The Multi-Physics Modeling and Simulation Department at Sandia National Laboratories California conducts a wide range of computational simulations including large-deformation nonlinear solid mechanics and failure full system structural dynamics; hydrodynamics; and coupled physics simulations (thermal electrical mechanical). To complete these simulations the department uses a variety of state-of-the-art analysis tools. Typical departmental programs include the following: detailed structural and thermal analyses of weapon systems (shock and random vibration crash and combined environments implicit and transient explicit); analysis-based design guidance for weapon components; the development of forging welding and additive manufacturing modeling capabilities; pressure vessel analyses including aging and failure; hydrodynamics modeling and simulations; and failure model development and implementation (metals and composites).

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Furthermore employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use falsification of information criminal activity serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position or you bid on positions that require a clearance a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e. of the U.S. and another country) your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
