Job Description:

What You Will Do

We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasma, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

T-5 is seeking qualified candidates at the R&D Scientist 2 level who will work at the intersection of computational physics, applied math, and machine learning. Successful candidates will develop algorithms for hydrodynamic inverse problems involving sparse tomographic measurements and other physics constraints. They will contribute to ongoing interdisciplinary, collaborative research in the group and establish their own research portfolio within the larger team. This will include participating in proposal development for internal and external proposal calls, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting research at conferences and workshops, and mentoring students and postdocs. Desired qualifications include demonstrated expertise in PDE-based machine learning algorithms, generative neural network architectures, and parameter estimation.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary scientific environment
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Publications and presentations in one or more of the following areas: applied mathematics, computational physics, theoretical mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, plasma physics, or fusion science
  • Experience mentoring students
  • Expertise in computational and/or mathematical physics with a focus on at least one of the following areas:
  • Data driven algorithms in continuum mechanics, constitutive modeling, and/or materials science
  • Reduced order modeling
  • PDE-constrained optimization and parameter estimation

Education/Experience: Positions requires a Bachelor' degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Eulerian and/or Lagrangian computational fluid simulations
  • Experience with the development and application machine learning algorithms based on underlying physical principles
  • Experience in the development and/or application of optimization and parameter estimation techniques
  • Familiarity with HPC computing, including GPU or other heterogeneous hardware
  • Experience mentoring postdocs
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

COVID Vaccine:

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year.

Note to Applicants:

Please include in the application a CV, contact information for 3 references, and a detailed cover letter describing your interest in the position and how you meet minimum requirements and desired qualifications listed above
