Job Description

We have an opening for a Director of the Center for Computational Engineering. You will lead and enhance a competency that researches and integrates advanced computational methods modeling and simulation focusing on current and future mission applications. You will be a member of the Engineering Directorate senior technical team and will serve as the steward of excellence in this critical mission-enabling technical area. This position is in the Engineering Directorate Associate Directors (AD) Office.

This Center Director position is funded at approximately 50% time and the successful candidate must maintain other roles making technical or management contributions. Those complementary assignments are at the discretion and direction of the funding programmatic elements.

In this roleyou will

  • Refine adapt and lead the strategic direction for Computational Engineering in the Engineering Directorate and the Laboratory to ensure it is aligned with the Institutional and Directorate roadmaps.
  • Develop and manage research and development projects in advanced computational methods modeling and simulation including exploring and extending numerical discretizations implementation on advanced computational platforms building and maintaining software tools and workflows for broad use across LLNL missions coordination with related efforts in data science and design optimization.
  • Engage in program development for the Laboratory while promoting partnerships with sponsor organizations academia industry national laboratories and national science and engineering organizations.
  • Provide strategic leadership to a team of talented staff as well as attract new talent that will develop the next generation of breakthrough technologies for the Laboratory.
  • Represent the Laboratory in communicating the goals and accomplishments of the Center for Computational Engineering with the broader technical community and develop relationships with external sponsor organizations.
  • Coordinate with the leadership of the Computational Engineering Division the administrative home for the majority of relevant engineering workforce.
  • Initiate facilitate and maintain collaboration with the external scientific and engineering community at universities other laboratories and industry.
  • Work closely with senior management programs and sponsors and the external technical community to achieve relevant goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in Engineering Mathematics or Physical Sciences or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive experience developing computational engineering methods for a variety of applications that are novel and address the needs of customers and extensive experience developing and executing research and development projects relating to computational engineering.
  • Familiarity with one or more relevant national technical communities and experience with developing leading and implementing computational engineering projects and attracting R&D funding from external sponsors.
  • Expert knowledge of strategic planning and business development practices to achieve optimal results.
  • Expert problem solving analytical technical organizational and management skills necessary to independently advise recommend and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
  • Experience making decisions based on comprehensive information and the recommendations of others that significantly affect the ability of the organization and Laboratory to achieve overall objectives and long-range goals.
  • Extensive experience managing projects with multiple and complex components that require coordination from a variety of organizations.
  • Expert communication facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present explain influence and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Extensive experience interacting with the national technical community developing leading and implementing programs for a private company university or laboratory and attracting R&D funding from external sponsors.
  • Experience managing significant business development activities for national security program execution.
  • Experience with private sector national agency or DOE programs and policies and the development of partnership strategies with external organizations.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
