Job Description:

Requisition Id9054

Overview:
The Neutrino Research Group in the Fundamental Nuclear and Particle Physics Section within the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Physics Division seeks applicants for an R&D Associate staff position. The group is looking for someone passionate about advancing the state-of-the-art methods for a variety of physics and engineering applications in particular transport methods and coupled physics simulations. These methods will be implemented using modern code development tools and practices to be scalable to the worlds largest supercomputers including advanced heterogeneous architectures. We are looking for developers with experience in high-energy and nuclear physics experiments to help develop and integrate the new Monte Carlo detector simulation code Celeritas into HEP and NP frameworks that are used at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and other HEP experimental facilities such as the neutrino program at Fermilab and the Sanford Underground Reseach Facility.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performing individual and collaborative R&D for complex problems and communicating the technical aspects of the work performed through publications and presentations.
  • Effectively interacting with technical peers program managers and sponsors both domestically and internationally to meet the requirements of projects within scope schedule and budget.
  • Leading elements of research projects with some latitude to define objectives and approaches to ensure technical and programmatic success.
  • Effectively interacting both domestically and internationally with technical peers program managers and sponsors to meet the requirements of projects within scope schedule and budget and advance the use of the leadership computing facilities for HEP in particular the CERN research program.

As a computational physicist your duties may include:

  • The development implementation and optimization of methods and algorithms for radiation transport and coupled multi-physics applications on leadership-class computer hardware including GPUs and accelerators.
  • The development of user features verification and validation of production-quality HEP and nuclear software for detector simulation neutronics multiphysics and radiation shielding applications for global distribution.
  • The development numerical analysis and verification of new computational methods for complex problems in HEP and nuclear technology applications.
  • Coordination with leadership computing facilities including the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) to manage allocations job queues and application deployment.

Basic Qualifications

  • A PhD in physics nuclear engineering computer science or related discipline
  • Demonstrated programming experience in modern C/C++ (>= C++-11)
  • Experience using or developing detector simulation frameworks such as those based on Geant4 that are applied towards detector simulation in LHC experiments e.g. CMS ATLAS ALICE or others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of computational physics R&D as demonstrated through research and associated publications
  • A background in computational particle transport methods and/or physics particularly Monte Carlo methods for particles defined by the Standard Model (SM)
  • Broad experience with advanced programming models including MPI and OpenMP
  • GPU-based programming models including CUDA/HIP SYCL OpenMP or equivalent
  • Familiar with software tools expected to be heavily used in this position which include Python Git parallel Linux/POSIX computing platforms parallel job queuing systems and parallel visualization software (Paraview VisIt)
  • Experience using profiling and debugging software in large-scale parallel computing environments.
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal presentation and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers and program managers.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
