Country: United States

Job Description:

Requisition Id9016

Overview:

The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics (SACP) Group within the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Computational Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking applicants for an early-career research scientist position.

We are looking for someone passionate about advancing the state-of-the-art methods for a variety of engineering applications in particular in CFD transport methods and coupled physics simulations. These methods will be implemented using modern code development tools and practices to be scalable to the worlds largest supercomputers including advanced heterogeneous architectures. We are looking for someone with development experience in high-energy physics experiments to help develop and integrate the new Monte Carlo detector simulation code Celeritas into HEP frameworks that are used at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and other HEP experimental facilities.

At ORNL we solve the most challenging problems of our time. Working side-by-side with the worlds best scientists and technology leaders we address challenges on a global scalefrom energy storage to the origins of the universe to life-saving drug discovery. Unique among the Department of Energys 17 national labs ORNL has expertise across multiple disciplines ranging from fundamental discovery to deployed technologies. This depth and breadth of science provides candidates and colleagues a broad spectrum of growth opportunities and the ability to join a mission to positively impact the US economy public health and national security.

Home to the fourth #1 supercomputer ORNL has a deep legacy in HPC. Frontier is the worlds fastest and first exascale supercomputer--providing an open science environment to develop solutions that touch us all. With direct access to Frontier we can simulate and engineer solutions that only exascale computing can enable.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform individual and collaborative R&D for complex problems and communicating the technical aspects of the work performed through publications and presentations.
  • Effectively interact with technical peers program managers and sponsors both domestically and internationally to meet the requirements of projects within scope schedule and budget.
  • Lead elements of research projects with some latitude to define objectives and approaches to ensure technical and programmatic success.
  • Contribute to the identification and development of research proposals through work with project sponsors and cross-institutional collaborators.
  • Develop implement and optimize methods and algorithms for radiation transport and coupled multi-physics applications on leadership-class computer hardware including GPUs and accelerators.
  • Develop user features verification and validation of production-quality HEP and nuclear software for detector simulation neutronics multiphysics and radiation shielding applications for global distribution.
  • Develop and conduct numerical analysis and verification of new computational methods for complex problems in HEP and nuclear technology applications.
  • Coordinate with leadership computing facilities including the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) to manage allocations job queues and application deployment.
  • Interact with experimentalists analysts designers and engineers to apply advanced production modeling and simulation technologies to complex HEP and nuclear technology problems.

Basic Qualifications Required:

  • PhD in physics nuclear engineering computer science or an equivalent area encompassing applied science and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of computational physics R&D as demonstrated through research and associated publications.
  • Demonstrated programming experience in modern C/C++ (>= C++-11).
  • Experience using or developing detector simulation frameworks based on Geant4 that are applied towards detector simulation in LHC experiments e.g. CMS ATLAS ALICE or others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A research background in computational particle transport methods and/or physics particularly Monte Carlo methods for particles defined by the Standard Model (SM).
  • Broad experience with advanced programming models including MPI and OpenMP.
  • GPU-based programming models including CUDA/HIP SYCL OpenMP or equivalent.
  • The candidate should be familiar with software tools expected to be heavily used in this position which include Python Git parallel Linux/POSIX computing platforms parallel job queuing systems and parallel visualization software (Paraview VisIt).
