Position Overview Research Computing Services within Information Technologies invites applications for a Data Scientist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. This position reports directly to the Director, Research Computing Services (RCS). Overtime is rarely expected but can occur due to system failures that require a callout or overtime for other deadlines. The Data Scientist position will focus on developing statistical analyses of scientific data sets, constructing data processing pipelines, and implementing data management systems with a focus on problems that require the use of high performance computing resources. This work will directly support the projects of research faculty and postgraduate students. As such, it will involve extensive consulting and collaboration with researchers. Position Description Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to): Modeling, Programming, and Consulting Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with Principal Investigators and research groups to extract and analyze research data to enable research excellence in a multitude of different areas Provide expert advice on data analysis Manipulate and analyze complex, high-volume data Develop and program new algorithms and models to enable improved research methodology Answer researchers' questions concerning appropriate techniques to analyze their data Assist in planning, developing, and implementing solutions to better serve the client base Represent the group to internal and external stakeholders as appropriate Balance service delivery capabilities with researcher expectations Ensure that the group is appraised and aware of all engagements and outcomes Ensure that community members have an appropriate understanding of RCS services by offering documentation, seminars, and tutorials Ensure support provided is timely and accurate Provide timely and updated documentation on techniques and analyses used so as to supplement the RCS knowledge base Pursue on-going professional development to stay current with the latest developments in statistics, machine learning, and data analysis Research Computing Strategy Contribute to the development of infrastructure development plans based on machine learning project requirements discovered during project planning and execution Contribute to cluster policy development that enables users to complete their research Develop user training and education opportunities that facilitate effective use of high performance computing cluster for machine learning projects Identify upcoming research areas that will require computational and project support Qualifications / Requirements: Advanced Undergraduate degree (Masters or Ph.D preferred) in a quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Compute Science, Engineering, Science), Doctoral degree preferred Minimum of five years of recent and directly related experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered Experience with Linux and Bourne Shell Scripting Knowledge of Statistics and Machine Learning Experience with Bioinformatics pipelines Experience with Hadoop Ecosystem Architecture, Database Management Familiarity with Job Schedulers and Cluster Computing Ability to work independently to carry out assignments and projects Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have an ability to effectively work in the RCS team The ability and desire to work in a strong team-oriented environment Data Analysis Programming skills: Python (esp. experience with libraries like NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn, and Tensorflow) R MATLAB SQL MRI, Genomics, and Image processing tools Scientific Computing Experience: C, C++, Fortran Application Deadline: January 1, 2020 We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
