The C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry at West Virginia University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Chemistry with a specialization in Computational Chemistry starting August 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position with full benefits. We seek an outstanding scholar who will develop a vigorous and externally funded research program in computational chemistry, broadly defined, that is complementary to existing research efforts in the Department.

The expected teaching load is 2 courses per year plus contributions to instruction through the graduate research program based on the expected high research activity. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes that complement the Chemistry Department’s current offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

The C Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry has 17 tenure-track faculty members, 10 teaching faculty, 10 research faculty and postdoctoral researchers, 10 staff, more than 90 graduate students, 100 undergraduate majors, and annual research expenditures of more than $3M. The Department’s research and educational activities include programs in the areas of organic synthesis and catalysis, bioanalytical chemistry, chemical education, inorganic chemistry, combustion chemistry, chemical dynamics, medicinal chemistry, and biophysics. The Department offers undergraduate degrees (BA, BS), and graduate degrees (MS, PhD) in chemistry and is a partner in the intercollegiate biochemistry program (BS). The Department was ranked 115^th in the 2022 US News survey of graduate programs in chemistry. WVU provides facilities with cutting-edge technology across three campuses in Morgantown. Shared research facilities, health sciences core facilities, NMR facility and High-Performance Computing (HPC) program are dedicated to support the needs of researchers.

The successful applicant must have 1) a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Chemistry or a closely related field; 2) teaching ability in a traditional area of chemistry; 3) research and teaching interests in computational chemistry; 4) demonstrated ability to develop a vigorous and externally funded research program; 5) ability to collaborate in research with faculty in other disciplines at the department and the University levels; 6) strong potential for outstanding contribution to the Department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching and research missions; 7) excellent written and oral communication skills.
