$99700 - $196100

*Salary range is estimated and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for nation's security?We are seeking an outstanding experimentalist to support world leading research in semiconductor-based devices for quantum information science applications. Areas of specific interest include silicon nanofabrication low-noise high-bandwidth electrical characterization coherent control of single-atoms or quantum-dots quantum information cryogenics (T < 1 K) electron-spin or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and cryogenic circuitry (e.g. amplification and sensors). Extensive opportunities exist for collaborating with internal and external scientists on a broad range of quantum information topics. Sandia Job Title: R&D S&E Physics.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Characterize and operate semiconductor quantum dot and superconductor devices at dilution refrigerator temperatures
  • Work with a dedicated team to both design new device structures as well as tackle problems in existing devices
  • Work with Sandia staff and managers to write internal and external proposals in new areas of quantum information science
  • Conduct original research in quantum information science while also supporting internal Sandia research teams
  • Work with a collaborative team on large-scale projects as part of a fat-paced technically challenging research organization
  • Conduct research and collaborate with others resulting in presentations at international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals

Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in Physics Chemistry Materials Science or related science technology engineering or mathematics (STEM) field
  • Bachelors in Physics Chemistry Materials Science or related STEM field
  • Proven interpersonal skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and professional presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally your background would also include:

  • Experience in a research area related to quantum information science
  • Experience with cryogenic systems including dilution refrigerators
  • Experience designing and fabricating nanoscale quantum devices
  • Research experience on solid state qubit systems (e.g. Si or SiGe-based quantum dots donors)
  • Record of publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
  • Willingness to be flexible in job assignments
  • Desire to develop expertise in different areas of device modeling
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Proven ability to work creatively on a complex research problem
  • Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly to other team members

About Our Team:

The Quantum Phenomena Department (01867) is part of the Material Physical Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories which creates new scientific knowledge in support of Sandia's national security mission. We provide science-based solutions to meet the needs of various offices within the Department of Energy (especially the Office of Basic Energy Sciences various Energy Technology Offices and the National Nuclear Security Administration) as well as other government agencies. Our work spans the spectrum from fundamental research to pioneering applications. This department has a very broad range of research programs that include theory and experiment relating to quantum-based computation communication and fundamental science. Research topics in this department include quantum transport quantum materials quantum optics as well as work on superconducting materials and devices. We also have ongoing work on the physics of quantum dots quantum wells topological insulators and 2D materials and interfaces. The Quantum Phenomena Department at Sandia has a long history of performing groundbreaking basic research on the transmission and manipulation of quantum-based information.

Security Clearance:
