Job Description:

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days including the posting date. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

Join our research team of hardworking computational scientists at the Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI) working together to develop improved multiscale/multiphysics models for applications associated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and more generally multiscale process coupling. Your work will impact a variety of operational codes across several mission areas and applications including shocks turbulence climate modeling and plasma simulations.

The initial project for this position will be to research new techniques for developing and coupling sub-grid scale parameterizations of processes that cannot be resolved but must nevertheless be accounted for in a larger scale simulation. Particular emphasis will be given to new data-driven techniques such as dynamic mode decomposition and data-driven discovery of nonlinear dynamics that are connected to the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems via the Koopman operator. Over time there is flexibility to join other projects and take the time to grow expertise in a new research area under mentorship of our team and other CSRI staff.

More broadly we are looking for a dedicated postdoctoral appointee to join our team and conduct novel research that spans multiple fields in the physical sciences engineering and scientific computing; and who will enjoy continued learning working on research teams and helping to develop new ideas. Our team and our collaborators in CSRI are committed to nurturing a culture compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce. In support of this vision we are actively recruiting applicants from a diverse group of backgrounds and who are committed to encouraging an inclusive community.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Conduct innovative research in scientific computing algorithm development and/or computational physics in the context of multiscale process coupling broadly defined individually or as part of a research team
  • Work towards publishing new developments in high-profile peer-reviewed scientific journals or refereed conference proceedings; contribute to development of open-source software for high performance computing environments
  • Integrate new developments and algorithms into operational code bases
  • Interact with a diverse set of colleagues from your own field applications specialists and others
  • Develop or aid in scientific computing through scripting or programming using Python Fortran and/or C++
  • Collaborate on research papers reports and presentations

This position has the possibility of travel to participate in workshops and conferences. Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD (earned or nearing completion) in applied mathematics physics computational science physics computer science or a related engineering or scientific field
  • Experience with one or more of the following relevant research domains: numerical methods for solving partial differential equations; numerical linear algebra; high-performance computing; nonlinear optimization; scientific machine learning; dynamic mode decomposition (DMD); sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy); Koopman operator theory
  • Experience in code development for scientific applications
  • Evidence of strong research achievements in relevant technical areas as shown in the form of technical publications presentations software tools and/or knowledge of applications (publication/presentation list should be included as part of the CV)

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A dedication to encouraging an inclusive culture as proven in your application materials
  • Experience with multiscale applications such as turbulent CFD atmospheric dynamics and plasma physics
  • Experience/background in numerical methods for CFD such as finite volume methods finite element methods or meshfree methods
  • Experience/background in numerical analysis and algorithm design for machine learning or data-driven methods including DMD and SINDy
  • Experience/background with multiscale process coupling to include time stepping algorithms
  • Experience in scientific programming and scripting in Python C++ and/or Fortran to include parallel programming models
  • A proven track record of performing R&D as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience in collaborative code development and familiarity with modern software design principles to include automated testing

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Furthermore employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use falsification of information criminal activity serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position or you bid on positions that require a clearance a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e. of the U.S. and another country) your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
