Salary Range:

$99700 - $166800 *Salary range is estimated and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidates experience and qualifications and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a research scientist/engineer who is a creative problem solver for chemical reaction modeling and chemical mechanism analysis aerosol physics benchmarking and optimization of code performance on different heterogeneous hardware and the use of these codes in computational studies of chemical reaction systems.

Will work in close collaboration with computational research staff employing C++ software in heterogenous CPU-GPU computing environments with active contribution to the development of advanced open-source codes to model and analyze atmospheric chemical mechanisms in climate models and other science and engineering applications. The project you will be working on targets massively parallel computational modeling and analysis of global climate modeling.

We are seeking one or more researcher in chemical engineering atmosphere or computational science who are passionate about development of scientific C++ software and algorithm development to join our team of developers working on climate models and other science and engineering applications that can take advantage of exascale computing resources. This position requires a significant interaction with other team members for collaborative code development.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform fundamental software development and code architecture design for atmospheric chemistry models computational science and math libraries
  • Analysis of atmospheric chemistry and climate models and other science and engineering applications
  • Design and implement algorithms in various code environments associated with applications for atmospheric chemistry and climate applications
  • Work closely with other staff members to contribute to research and development of science and engineering computer codes
  • Utilize on serial MPI parallel and GPU performance aspects of science and engineering application codes
  • Communicate research and development results through presentations and publications in research venues and at project meetings
  • Work with the team to create the strategy for future impactful computer science R&D projects and codes

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in a field of chemical /physical engineering or sciences
  • Experience with PDE and ODE models for aerosols chemistry and/or fluid flow
  • Experience in C++ software development and in computational science.
  • Experience coding for GPU architectures with the Kokkos programming model
  • Evidence of relevant research and development achievements as proven in the form of technical publications presentations software tools and/or knowledge of applications

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Analysis of climate models and other science and engineering applications
  • Experience with Kokkos Fortran and/or Python computing libraries/languages (in addition to C++)
  • Experience with algorithms for the solution and analysis of differential equations
  • Familiarity with PDE and ODE models for aerosols chemistry fluid flow
  • Experience with verification of code development
  • Experience with optimization UQ surrogate models and/or machine learning
  • Training and experience in Research Software Engineering and its practice
  • Curiosity about teaming to solving challenging interdisciplinary R&D problems relevant to DOE missions as part of an inclusive environment
  • Experience coding on scientific application projects as part of a team with software engineering processes such as version control regression tests verification and documentation

The Computational Science Department performs innovative software development and technical analysis through physics-based modeling and simulation using our applications expertise as 'power users' to guide software development at Sandia's Center for Computing Research. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references credit law enforcement records and employment/education verifications. Furthermore employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use falsification of information criminal activity serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position or you bid on positions that require a clearance a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e. of the U.S. and another country) your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
