Salary Range:

$99700 - $196100

*Salary range is estimated and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Thermal Computational Modeling Researcher to join our collaborative team.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Perform verification validation and/or uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) of thermal fluid dynamics and/or reacting material (e.g. solid decomposition gas phase combustion fire) simulations to support a variety of projects (e.g. nuclear safety/design and energy related research) for internal and external customers (e.g. the Department of Energy).
  • Develop and utilize state-of-the-art tools to conduct computational simulation studies for VVUQ (e.g. fluid dynamics turbulent flow multiphase flow conductive/convective/radiative transport thermal-mechanical reacting flow porous media flow and heat transfer and thermal decomposition).
  • Apply and develop uncertainty quantification techniques to build model credibility through the application of verification and validation principles.
  • Work closely with teams of code developers analysts and experimentalists to perform validation of complex and challenging problems.
  • Collaborate and interact closely with engineers and other researchers and analysts across the laboratory at both the California and New Mexico sites.

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in mechanical chemical aerospace engineering or natural science field (mathematics physics statistics)
  • Strong educational background in one or more of the following areas: heat transfer (including conduction convection and radiation) fluid dynamics reacting materials/chemistry/combustion statistical analysis applied mathematics
  • Demonstrated programming or scripting experience (e.g. C/C++ Matlab or Python)
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Proven ability to present and publish research findings and make original contributions to engineering science
  • Proven experience in analysis code development for engineering sciences applications
  • Experience with data science machine learning statistical methods and/or uncertainty quantification techniques

About Our Team:

The mission of the other department 1544 the V&V UQ Credibility Processes department is to provide research development and application of mathematical and experimental techniques to assess the credibility of physics-based computational simulations. The multi-disciplinary team experienced in simulation and experimentation draws from a wide range of disciplines including fluid dynamics electromagnetics radiation effects solid and structural mechanics heat transfer numerical methods optimization statistics and risk assessment to support the laboratories mission. The analysis tools developed in 1544 can be used to (1) focus and prioritize research and development expenditures (2) mitigate risk through exploration of system design alternatives (3) optimize products and process in the presence of both uncertain and variable parameters and (4) support risk-informed decision making based on statistically-quantified data.
