Job Description:

The Energy Geosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opportunity for a post-doctoral fellow with expertise in computational geometry for discontinuous, dynamic/evolving systems relevant to the energy geosciences. The successful candidate will develop novel 3D numerical algorithms and computer toolsets for fractured, multi-body geological systems that involve moving interacting boundaries. The candidate should have strong theoretical understanding and coding experience that includes planar subdivisions and spatial partitioning, arrangements, Minkowski addition, graph theory, which will be applied to intersecting moving interfaces, and multi-body contacts. The candidate should also have the vision and ability to extend this toolset for next-generation computing. What You Will Do: Develop a toolset for 3D mesh generation that rigorously incorporates complex discrete fractures and rock matrix Develop a 3D code for accurate and efficient multi-body contact analysis Develop a 3D code for evolving interacting boundaries Develop new capabilities and/or features for in-house codes Collaborate with scientists in other fields such as rock mechanics, hydrogeology, geophysics, and geochemistry for applications in a wide range of energy geosciences research Author peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports. What is Required: A recent Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, or equivalent discipline; Expertise in coding of planar subdivisions and spatial partitioning, arrangements, Minkowski addition, graph theory with demonstration of creativity, and proven accomplishments; Good programming skill is required, with fluency in C/C++, and/or C#, FORTRAN; Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a multidisciplinary group of scientists; Good verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and for writing peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Equal Employment Opportunity: Berkeley Lab is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or protected veteran status. Berkeley Lab is in compliance with the Pay Transparency Nondiscrimination Provision under 41 CFR 60-1.4. Click here to view the poster and supplement: "Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law."
