Salary Range:

$99700 - $196100

*Salary range is estimated and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Materials and Failure Modeling Department is seeking a highly motivated and productive individual to join our inclusive team and contribute to ongoing computational solid mechanics research develop and analysis focused on damage and fracture mechanics.

On any given day you will have the opportunity to:

  • Apply the principles of linear and nonlinear fracture mechanics to support a work portfolio covering a full spectrum of research development and applications and create solutions to engineering challenges of national importance
  • Use state-of-the-art finite element codes and world class computational resources to support the design development and qualification of complex engineering materials and systems
  • Partner with in-house code development teams to develop implement and utilize predictive computational tools
  • Partner with material scientists and experimentalists to design and conduct experiments to facilitate physics discovery and model validation
  • Build a strong basis for model credibility through the quantification of margins and uncertainties
  • Develop a robust research portfolio through peer-reviewed journal publications conference presentations and participation in professional societies

Qualifications We Require:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Applied Mechanics Aerospace Engineering Civil Engineering or related field
  • Background in the foundations of solid mechanics including strength of materials continuum mechanics and material mechanics
  • Research experience in modeling nonlinear material behavior fracture mechanics and material failure prediction
  • Experience performing mechanical finite element calculations to study large deformation fracture and failure of materials under complex loading conditions
  • Computer programming skills and software development experience using object-oriented languages such as C++ and Python
  • Strong communication skills as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and/or external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in constitutive model development.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with experimental methods for material characterization
  • Experience with stochastic analysis and quantification of margins and uncertainty
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience working in a collaborative environment

The Materials and Failure Modeling Department of Sandia National Laboratories performs material mechanics R&D develops advanced engineering models and deploys state-of-the-art computational capabilities to enable physically credible prediction of material behavior and failure in support of Sandias mission.
