Lecturer in Computational Chemistry

Are you an academic with a proven ability to carry out teaching and research in Computational Chemistry with a focus on ab initio calculations? Do you have an excellent research record and proven success obtaining funding? Are you passionate about delivering an exceptional student experience in a research-intensive Russell Group University?

The School of Chemistry has a strong focus on computational chemistry with many staff primarily working on theory/modelling (molecular dynamics, AI, machine learning, cheminformatics, atmospheric and combustion models) or making use of various aspects of theory in their research and teaching. The School is seeking to employ an expert in the field of Computational Chemistry with a focus on electronic structure calculations to generate original research/lead an independent research group and spearhead teaching in this field. An important role will be to actively collaborate with colleagues across the School to enhance publications and grant applications. A proven ability to interact with experimentalists, particularly those within the School’s main research themes, would be beneficial. An additional component of the role will be to lead the development of a new taught MSc programme in this area. You will be part of the Physical Chemistry Teaching Section of the School but your research and teaching will impact staff and students across the School, the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and further into the University.

The primary objective of this position is to generate a vibrant research group in the area of Computational Chemistry focused on electronic structure calculations. You will be encouraged to develop links with research groups across the School and beyond. You will have a lead role in co-ordinating the delivery of teaching within the field of computational chemistry and you will lead the taught MSc programme in Chemistry and Digital Science, part of a suite of taught MSc programmes.

A significant component of the role (approximately 0.2 FTE) will be to collaborate and interact with other members of staff in their use of electronic structure calculations. You will be encouraged participate in joint research proposals where your expertise in calculations will increase the credibility of the proposal and hence likelihood of funding. You will be based in the Physical Chemistry Teaching Section and will take on general teaching duties such as tutorials and demonstrating commensurate with your workload.
