Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation’s future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview

The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks applicants for a new two-year research staff scientist position with the goal of establishing a new effort in the area of Computational Materials Science, involving the theoretical/computational prediction, development, understanding, and characterization of correlated and topological quantum materials for the next generation of energy and quantum information science and technology.

Position Description
The Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division seeks an individual with a proven track record of research achievement capable of leading the new effort that complements existing research programs within the department.  We are especially interested in candidates who, through their research, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the research effort of CMPMSD.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a new research effort with impact in correlated and topological materials, with the aim of gaining longer-term funding from the US Department of Energy.
  • Collaborate effectively to further the department’s goals in energy and quantum information science and technology.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics or related discipline and at least two years of postdoctoral or higher level experience.
  • Solid track record in disseminating research in journal publications and talks at conferences.
  • Demonstrated research background in atomistic modeling and topology analysis of crystals, interfaces, defects, noncollinear/frustrated magnets, and inhomogeneous superconducting systems, both in and out of equilibrium.
  • Demonstrated experience in both first-principles and effective Hamiltonian treatments of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions, spin-orbit coupling, interplay of interactions and topology, and interplay of multiple electronic and lattice degrees of freedom.
  • Familiarity with various computational methods.
  • Knowledge of machine learning methods for predictive materials research is preferred.

At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to:
