Job Description:

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division (CRD) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of combinatorial algorithms and numerical linear algebra with a strong emphasis on the application of novel machine learning techniques, such as deep neural networks and reinforcement learning. This role will be part of the Scalable Solvers Group within the CRD. The successful candidate will participate in research activities related to computational mathematics that are relevant to the Department of Energy (DOE) and LBNL missions. This role will also focus on the development of combinatorial algorithms based on (deep) learning, for use in sparse linear algebra and large scale graph problems, as well as the development of high performance software tools for deployment of the developed algorithms on leadership class computing infrastructure. What You Will Do: Development of new algorithms for combinatorial graph problems relying on novel machine learning approaches, and high performance software for deployment on large scale parallel computing infrastructure. Analysis and evaluation of the efficiency and reliability of these new algorithms by comparing with existing algorithms. What is Required: PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Science or Engineering within the last 3 years. Knowledge of machine learning methods, such as neural networks and reinforcement learning. Background in linear algebra, graph theory. Programming proficiency in a high-level programming language, such as C++/C/FORTRAN or Python. Experience in parallel computing, being able to use MPI+OpenMP and/or Cuda. Excellent communication skills are essential. Additional Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of sparse linear algebra and in particular sparse direct solvers. Knowledge of performance optimization for scientific codes. The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
