With a rapidly increasing demand for computational science tools and a new 6 petaflop supercomputer coming online in 2020, INL is seeking a strategic thought leader with a passion for research computing and a proven record of growing applied scientific computing programs. The Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) Division works with engineers and scientists across the laboratory on challenging computational/data science problems leading to the discovery and deployment of new energy materials, technologies, and systems. Our emerging Collaborative Computing Center creates a natural connecting point for scientific computing at INL. The steadily growing ASC Division seeks an exceptional Chief Computational/Data Scientist! Responsibilities • Develop nationally-recognized scientific computing capabilities and integrate computing expertise across all INL’s research and engineering directorates. o Nuclear Science and Technology o Energy and Environment o National and Homeland Security o Advanced Test Reactor o Materials and Fuels Complex • Conceive, plan, resource and execute significant computational initiatives in support of research and engineering directorates. • Support INL’s mission to discover, demonstrate, and secure innovative nuclear energy solutions, other clean energy options, and critical infrastructure. • Create strategic research and engineering partnerships with universities, industry, and other national laboratories. • Provide visionary leadership ensuring the integration of experiment with computation and Artificial Intelligence (AI). QUALIFICATIONS • Degree in an engineering, applied science or computational field with relevant combination of degree and years experience in performing and leading research: o MS plus 8 years experience o PhD plus 6 years experience • Strategic thought leader with history of addressing computational needs and future opportunities. • Deep analytical skills with a proficiency in theory and application of computational science, applied mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or visualization. • Consistent track record of accomplishments through publications, awards, professional recognition, and execution of research and development vision and strategy. • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and experience in interacting with researchers and leadership. • Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain and hold a U.S. DOE “Q clearance. • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment. • Depending on level of selected candidate, may require review and approval by technical committee.
