We are seeking a computational modeling researcher (job title: R&D S&E Computer Science) to join our multidisciplinary computational research team in supporting a variety of projects involving chemical science mass and energy transfer fluid dynamics materials research and related topical areas. Our work in these areas often includes multiscale modeling machine learning uncertainty quantification (UQ) statistical inversion and validation of domain-specific models (e.g. atomistic materials models or quantum chemistry models). Well-matched candidates should be creative problem solvers with fundamental knowledge in one or more of these areas with extensive experience in scientific computing as evidenced by publications and codes.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Perform verification validation and/or uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) of thermal fluid dynamics and/or reacting material (e.g. solid decomposition gas phase combustion fire) simulations to support a variety of projects (e.g. nuclear safety/design and energy related research) for internal and external customers (e.g. the Department of Energy).
  • Develop and use tools to conduct computational simulation studies for verification and validation (VV) and/or UQ as applied to quantum chemistry chemical kinetics fluid dynamics turbulent flow multiphase flow conductive/convective/radiative transport thermal-mechanical material response reacting flow porous media flow and heat transfer or thermal decomposition.
  • Apply and develop uncertainty quantification techniques to build model credibility through the application of verification and validation principles.
  • Work closely with teams of code developers analysts and experimentalists to perform validation of complex and challenging problems.
  • Collaborate and interact closely with scientists engineers and other researchers and analysts across the laboratory at both the California and New Mexico sites.

Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed and/or hired by one of several organizations at Sandia National Laboratories.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in physical sciences applied mathematics engineering or other relevant field; or equivalent experience
  • Experience with uncertainty quantification and/or machine learning
  • Experience with computational science and software development
  • Demonstrated programming or scripting experience (e.g. C/C++ Matlab or Python)
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience using machine learning tools in the physical sciences
  • Experience in performing research as part of a diverse and interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to present and publish research findings and make original contributions to engineering science
  • Proven experience in analysis code development for engineering sciences applications

About Our Team:

Sandia/California's research group is a diverse multidisciplinary community of scientists and engineers who specialize in computational modeling of a variety of science and engineering topics. The work mix includes theory and modeling scientific and high-performance computing and applied engineering analysis of experiments and mechanical designs. The modeling and simulation group plays two primary roles in science-based engineering at Sandia: (1) developing new computational methods capabilities and tools to describe chemical and physical systems; and (2) performing computational analysis to predict the design performance of engineered systems in defense energy and industry applications.

The Plasma & Reacting Flow Science department primarily works on projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science to address needs surrounding both high temperature and low temperature plasma phenomena combusting flows reacting gas-solid interfaces uncertainty quantification (UQ) and related topics such as scientific machine learning. We operate state-of-the-art experimental laboratories conduct work at the DIII-D tokamak reactor and utilize both local computer clusters and the DOE Leadership Class supercomputers to conduct massively parallel simulations.

The mission of the Quantitative Modeling & Analysis department is to conduct R&D and systems engineering in computer science and engineering across the technical spectrum from data to decision making. Research is ongoing to enhance predictive modeling in a variety of domains. The department has expertise in computer science software development and applied mathematics. Primary research areas include uncertainty quantification optimization inference modeling data assimilation and algorithm development. Primary application development work focuses on verification validation and uncertainty quantification of complex problems. We develop tools that address specific analysis steps as well as integrating those tools in a productive workflow.
